Rockstar Games has explained why it chose Jason and Lucia as the two protagonists for Grand Theft Auto VI (hereinafter GTA 6). The decision came from the realization that increasing the number of main characters would reduce the time players spend with each character, diluting their connection.
In an interview with IGN published on August 27, Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, said that the team discussed several possibilities regarding the protagonist roster following GTA 5.
GTA 5 was the first in the series to introduce a mechanic that allowed players to switch between three protagonists: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. Rockstar Games considered expanding this further in the sequel, looking into having four playable protagonists.
However, as the character count grew, it became difficult to allocate enough time to each character's story. "We worried about diluting the amount of player time with each and therefore player connection with those characters," Nelson explained. Consequently, instead of adding more characters, the studio decided to focus on two individuals in a relationship.
The relationship between Jason and Lucia is connected not only to the narrative setup but also to gameplay mechanics. Players can switch between the two characters and explore Leonida together, enjoying activities such as pool, mini-golf, and kayaking. Committing crimes together, such as robbing stores or banks, also positively impacts their relationship.
Spending time together in the open world develops the relationship between the two characters and heightens the player's emotional connection to their story. However, even if players do not actively participate in relationship-building activities, the narrative mostly ties the two together as partners in crime. Players have the choice of whether to engage deeply in the emotional dynamics.
While GTA 5 intersected the stories of three characters living different lives, GTA 6 places weight on the process of understanding Jason and Lucia individually and the relationship formed when the two are together.
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
