Double Fine Productions has reclaimed the intellectual property and publishing rights to its games after splitting from Xbox.
Tim Schafer, head of Double Fine, recently appeared on the Kinda Funny podcast and revealed that along with the IP transfer, publishing rights for all of its games have returned to the studio. Consequently, revenue generated from existing game sales will now go directly to Double Fine.
Currently on Steam, the publisher for certain games, such as Psychonauts 2 and Keeper, is still listed as Xbox Game Studios. Schafer explained that it simply takes time for information changes following the rights transfer to be processed, and that current game purchases directly support Double Fine's operations.
Double Fine announced last July that it had become an independent studio again, concluding seven years with Xbox. Since then, the studio laid off 23 employees to establish a sustainable organization size, and it is building the foundation for developing its next projects through revenue from existing game sales and collaborations with external publishers.
On August 31, the studio will also launch a Kickstarter campaign for "Amnesia Fortnight 2026: Indie Reboot," based on its internal game jam. Under this format, ideas will be chosen by backer votes to create four prototypes, one of which will be developed into a small-scale game. The production process will be documented in a documentary by 2 Player Productions.
