'GTA V' is now being used in a drone training program for the Ukrainian military. The Ukrainian drone training center 'WeTrueGun' announced via the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense's official social media channels that it has developed and is operating an FPV drone training simulator based on GTA V.
According to WeTrueGun, the project was built using the legacy version of GTA V and the FiveM multiplayer framework. Trainees can practice searching for aerial targets in the game's urban environment, tracking moving targets, and performing direct-impact maneuvers with FPV drones. It was also reported that a feature for intercepting Iranian-made 'Shahed' suicide drones was recently added.

WeTrueGun emphasized that the program is not intended to replace official military simulators. Active-duty interceptor drone pilots use professional military simulators like 'Obriy,' and the GTA V-based program serves more as a supplementary tool to help maintain flight intuition and reaction speed while reducing stress.
The training process is structured in stages. Beginners start with the civilian FPV simulator 'LiftOff' before moving on to military-grade simulators like UFDS and Obriy. The GTA V-based server fills the gap by helping maintain flight intuition and providing practical urban maneuvering drills. WeTrueGun explained that the focus was on replicating the spatial awareness, speed control, and obstacle avoidance required for operating actual FPV drones.
The program is not currently available to the public and is used exclusively within the Ukrainian military's training curriculum. WeTrueGun stated that it provides the software and training course free of charge to recruits who have signed contracts with the Ukrainian military.
This is not the first time video games have been used for military training. Bohemia Interactive's 'Arma 3' has long been cited for military simulation purposes, and 'World of Tanks' has also been mentioned as a tool for tank tactics education.
