Persona 5’s global success has been borne out in hard numbers—and Sonic’s box-office power remains undiminished in games, too. Sega recently—and perhaps inadvertently—exposed key figures in its annual executive meeting minutes, revealing unit sales for its 11 major titles. As it’s unusual for Sega to disclose exact volumes outside of milestone announcements, these figures came as something of a surprise.
Among Sega’s flagship sales data, the high tally for Persona 5 and the ongoing strength of Sonic titles stand out. Persona 5 Royal notched a total of 7.25 million units sold—a figure that excludes the original Persona 5, itself known to have sold over 3 million copies. In effect, the Persona 5 franchise has surpassed 10 million units on its mainline titles alone.
Notably, Persona 5 Royal moved 2.08 million units on PS4 during its fiscal-year 2020–2022 exclusivity window. Following its remaster and multi-platform release on PC, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and Nintendo Switch, it sold an additional 5.17 million units over the next three years. This shift beyond exclusive platforms attests to the efficacy of Sega’s recent, aggressive multi-platform strategy.
Meanwhile, the Sonic franchise continues to post significant numbers. Sonic Frontiers sold 4.57 million copies, Team Sonic Racing 3.5 million, and Sonic Superstars 2.43 million—proof that Sonic’s IP still commands considerable popularity. Elsewhere, Total War: Three Kingdoms outpaced Total War: Warhammer III in sales, and Atlus’s Shin Megami Tensei V—including its Vengeance expansion—surpassed 2.11 million units.
Once considered a Japan-only franchise, Yakuza has also firmly established itself globally. Despite its adult-oriented content, Yakuza: Like a Dragon sold 2.86 million units; Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth sold 1.66 million; and the spin-off Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name moved 960,000 copies. Although Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s release was staggered across multiple dates, its strong first-year sales suggest other Yakuza entries will continue selling steadily.
Not included in the published minutes but worth noting: last year Atlus’s original IP Metaphor: ReFantazio exceeded 2 million units sold. Sega released 12 titles in 2024 and earned an 86% “Good” rating on Metacritic—enough to be named Publisher of the Year by the site.
