Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a superstar soccer player and striker at Manchester United, is now following the lead of Ronaldo. He is now investing in eSports.

According to Dot Esports, Challengermode, a Swedish platform service for eSports tournaments, has recently invested $1,300,000 in CS:GO and League of Legends tournaments, and Ibrahimovic was one of the investors.

Robel Efrem, CEO of Challengermode, revealed in his interview that he is happy to welcome the investors who chose to join the company. “We now see that the next wave of eSports is becoming mainstream around the world,” he added. “We are very excited about the investors who have chosen to join us to create the tools that allow players and brands to thrive in this rapidly growing field.”

This is the second time a superstar in soccer has decided to invest in eSports. Cristiano Ronaldo, the legendary soccer player of the current era, also invested in eSports last January; he now holds 50% stake of the Brazilian eSports club CNB. Neymar Jr., forward at FC Barcelona, also revealed his interest in eSports through his social media, showing that there is possibility that he will also invest in eSports in the future.

It seems like investment in eSports by traditional sports players is becoming a trend. Former NBA stars Shaquille O’Neal and Rick Fox have already made investments in the eSports business. In Europe, professional soccer teams like Schalke 04 and Fenerbahçe are starting eSports teams.
