CLG's season ends tomorrow, but its final game may decide the 8th seed of the LCS Championship

On the first day of the final week of the 2021 League Championship Series Summer Split, Counter Logic Gaming was mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the LCS Championship. However, this doesn't mean that CLG can't affect the post-season picture. Because of how the first two days of week 9 of the Summer Split have turned out, the result of Counter Logic Gaming's final match of the season may decide whether FlyQuest or Golden Guardians qualifies for the LCS Championship.

CLG came into week 9 with a narrow chance to keep its post-season hopes alive, but a hard-fought win by GG against FLY put CLG's survival into its own hands against Dignitas. Unfortunately for CLG, it was unable to defeat DIG and was eliminated from LCS Championship contention.

CLG's loss to DIG was its 32nd of the season. Even in a scenario where CLG went 2-0 while both FLY and GG went 0-2, the three-way tie would not be resolved by head-to-head since GG owns the head-to-head record against FLY, FLY owns the head-to-head against CLG, and CLG owns the head-to-head against GG. This type of 3-way tiebreaker is decided by Victory Score, in which the team with the most total game wins against the other two is declared the winner of the tiebreaker.

Instead, FlyQuest won its game against Immortals on Saturday, and Golden Guardians' loss earlier in the day to 100 Thieves has put FLY in sole possession of 8th place once again. For Golden Guardians to secure the 8th seed of the LCS Championship, it must defeat Immortals and then hope that Counter Logic Gaming can defeat FlyQuest in the final match of the Summer Split. This would result in a tie between GG and FLY with GG taking the 8th seed due to its 3-2 season record against FLY.

CLG may be out of the post-season, but if GG can finish strong and win its last match of the split against IMT, then CLG has a chance to play spoiler and deny FlyQuest the post-season with a win to finish 2021.
