In sweep of Evil Geniuses, Royal Never Give Up reach MSI finals for third time in five years

In a semifinals sweep of Evil Geniuses, Royal Never Give Up have qualified for the finals of the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational. RNG will face either G2 Esports or T1, who play on the other side of the semifinals bracket this evening.

While EG continued to try to execute throughout the series to come back into each game multiple times, RNG was strong enough to quash any attempts from the North American side. RNG won the first game in the most convincing fashion of the three, but throughout the series, a primary difference-maker was the mid lane priority RNG was able to create for Li "Xiaohu" Yuan-Hao despite rookie Joseph "jojopyun" Joon Pyun's ability to hold his own for EG in the laning phase.

This means that Royal Never Give Up will get a chance to defend their throne. The organization has had a fair amount of success at the Mid-Season Invitational over the years — the previous two times they've attended as the Chinese representative, they have won the entire event. The first time was in 2018, where RNG came very close to completing a royal road, aka a season in which a team wins every tournament it competes in, and the second time was just last year at MSI 2021.

Should T1 defeat G2 in the semifinals, it will be the second year in a row that Royal Never Give Up will face a South Korean representative in the finals of MSI. Like T1 this year, DWG KIA came into MSI 2021 as the overwhelming favorite, but was edged out by RNG in the final 3-2.

Regardless of who meets RNG in the final, all three organizations left at MSI 2022 have won the event in previous seasons. G2 Esports became the first Western team to win MSI in 2019, and T1 has won the event previously in 2016 and 2017.
