Nintendo drew anger and confusion from many Mario fans on Thursday when they released the cast list for the upcoming Mario movie being produced in collaboration with Illumination Studios, revealing they had cast Chris Pratt as Mario. They also released the actors for other roles, drawing mixed reactions for the rest of the cast list.

The full Cast list includes:

  • Chris Pratt as Mario
  • Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach
  • Charlie Day as Luigi
  • Jack Black as Bowser
  • Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
  • Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong
  • Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong
  • Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
  • Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike

As shown above, the upcoming animated movie from the studio that made Despicable Me will feature numerous big names as voice actors including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.

Chris Pratt as Mario drew a lot of negative attention, with many using #NotMyMario to protest the actor playing the titular role. While Pratt does have experience in voice-acting animated roles in movies like the Lego Movie, his voice is nothing like the usual depiction of Mario from the games. The decision was also confusing because Charles Martinet, an American actor well known for his portrayal of Mario, has even been confirmed as making a surprise cameo in the movie.

Many folks had mixed feelings about Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan Michael-Key as Toad, and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong.

On the more positive end of things, many fans praised the casting of Queens Gambit super star Anya Taylor-Joy to play Peach and others praised the casting of Jack Black to play Bowser.

The animated Mario movie will be released in theaters in Holiday 2022.
