Chaos in LCK: Who of KSV, ROX, SKT and JAG Will Qualify For The Playoffs of 2018 LCK Spring Split?

With all the tiebreakers that have been held in the NA LCS, no one can predict how the last week of LCK will go. Only Kingzone DragonX at first place and Kongdoo Monster at last have decided positions and the middle can change every day. Fans are anxious to see which teams will make it out of the fray and to the playoffs.

Kingzone is going straight to the finals, Afreeca Freecs and kt Rolster took two spots in the playoffs, but KSV, ROX Tigers, SKT T1 and Jin Air Green Wings (JAG) have to see what happens in the remaining matches. SKT T1 cannot reach the playoffs on their own and if they lose both of the remaining matches, they might fall to the relegation match.

Here, we’ve arranged the possibilities of how each team can reach the playoffs.

■ KSV: The start was good, but the finish is nearly hell.

- Match Record (Game Difference): 9-7 (+2)
- Upcoming Matches: ROX Tigers, Kingzone DragonX

KSV will be qualified for the playoffs with 1 win. If they have 2 wins, they have a chance to get up to 3rd according to KT’s results, and even if they have 1-1, 4th place is confirmed unless ROX has 2 wins.

However, the upcoming matches won’t be easy. ROX is performing better than KSV recently and their last match is 1st place Kingzone. They’ve already lost once to ROX in Round 1, and although they won against Kingzone in the first match, Khan was missing from Kingzone’s roster in that match.

Furthermore, Crown isn’t performing well with champions other than Vel’Koz and Azir recently. CuVee, who can carry the team if he plays champions like Gnar or Camille, lacks presence if he plays plain tank champions. So KSV’s weakness can be exploited from the draft.

If KSV has 2 losses, it will be very critical for them. In that situation, if SKT has 2 wins, they have to look into the game difference, and they’ve lost to SKT twice this split so they trail behind a bit. Considering how SKT is playing against relatively weak teams, there’s quite a high possibility of that happening.

KSV is in the most advantageous position but also in the most anxious situation; they need to bring out the power of the defending world champions.

■ ROX Tigers: Very close if they beat KSV.

- Match Record (Game Difference): 8W 8L (-1)
- Upcoming Matches: KSV, Jin Air Green Wings

ROX is in between KSV and SKT. They will be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs if they have 2-0, but if they have 1-1, two or three teams will need their game difference checked. Even if ROX has 0-2, they can qualify for the playoffs if SKT also goes 0-2, and still can consider the game difference if SKT goes 1-1. Of course, this doesn’t mean that it’s alright for them to lose.

Comparably, ROX is in a bit more comfortable position than KSV. The remaining matches are against KSV and JAG. KSV has not been providing very good performance recently and JAG is a team that they’ve beaten in Round 1. The changed meta isn’t that favorable to JAG because it’s not easy anymore to turtle up and endure.

All in all, if they defeat KSV, the game differences can be considered even in the worst cases, and they will be ahead of KSV; the match against KSV on Wednesday is really important for them.

■ SKT T1:Has the most favorable schedule, but not the easiest path.

- Match Record (Game Difference): 7W 9L (-3)
- Upcoming Matches: MVP, Kongdoo Monster

Compared to the difficult matchups that KSV and ROX have, SKT has a relatively easier schedule ahead of them. If they don’t lose both matches, they have to see how the other matches go. Even if they get 2W, they aren’t guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, but still can reach the playoffs with the right results from KSV and ROX. Even with 1W 1L, if ROX loses twice, they have a chance to have it come down to game difference. Another advantage is that they’ve won all matches against KSV and ROX this split, so they’re up front in that regard.

SKT lost to MVP in Round 1, but MVP’s performance is rather inconsistent and they’re last matchup is against Kongdoo in last place, so they may have an easier schedule than KSV or ROX. However, SKT’s performance isn’t quite consistent either; they lost to bbq and yet defeated KSV.

Even with this favorable schedule, they still have to maintain full concentration. If they lose twice, there’s a chance of them falling to the relegation match according to the results of Jin Air, MVP, and bbq. Since the other three teams’ remaining matches are against the top teams of LCK, it is very unlikely that SKT will have to go to the relegation match, but this Spring Split has had many unexpected events; they still need to beware.

■ Jin Air Green Wings: A very narrow chance still left…

-Match Record: 6-10 (-5)(-1)
-Upcoming Matches: Kingzone DragonX, ROX Tigers

Realistically, it’s nearly impossible for JAG to qualify. The only possibility they have is winning both matches and hope that ROX and SKT lose both matches as well. However, they meet Kingzone before playing against ROX. Furthermore, the -1 penalty of their in game difference seems bigger than ever.

JAG’s style is seeking the late game to have Teddy fully powered up, but in the recent meta, they’re not able to do that. After the 8.4 update, early advantages usually lead to victory; the upcoming matches are against teams that take initiative from the early game.

However, if JAG is able to overcome this unfavorable situation, they will make history.
