Starcraft ll legend Yun "TaeJa" Young Seo retired on Wednesday after a storied eight-year career as a professional gamer.

He spent most of his career competing with Team Liquid. While with TL, Taeja became one of the most decorated Starcraft ll players all time. He retired in 2016 after a gradual decline from his peak in 2014, but he returned to Team Liquid in 2018 following the completion of his military service. After competing for TL for another two years he made the decision to retire for a second time on Wednesday.

"After Season 3 of GSL 2020, I had time to decide the future, and decided to stop playing SC2 as a professional gamer," TaeJa said in his retirement announcement. "It wasn't an easy decision, I can feel I want to play more, but the circumstances aren't good for me. I'm getting older, and my skill on SC2 wasn't satisfying my expectations, so I decided [to retire]. I received a lot of love from my fans during my progaming period, It is really sad and sorry to my fans, but there is no regret of this decision for me."

The player concluded his farewell saying, "it's time to start a new chapter of my life, I'll get this though with my experience and knowledge which I got from my progaming life. I appreciate so much my fans who gave me much love more than I deserve, hopefully we can meet in the future again. Good Bye."

TaeJa started out as a prodigy with unparalleled physical and mental fortitude competing in Starcraft ll: Wings of Liberty. He signed with Team Liquid in 2012, where he would spend the rest of his storied career. During his peak from 2012 to 2014, the Terran player won an impressive eleven championships and placed in the top four of countless more.

"There are few individuals who have been as impactful as TaeJa in the path for Team Liquid to grow to where it is today," Co-founder of Team Liquid Victor "Nazgul" Goossens explained in an emotional statement on Wednesday. "We started working together when he was 17 years old. A rising talent, playing under the legendary SlayerS clan. Offering him an opportunity to play for us has turned out to be such a pivotal moment in our history."

He continued saying, "Together we traveled the world, won countless championships, and I couldn’t be more proud of what you have accomplished in your career nor more grateful for what you have meant to Liquid. Thank you for everything."

Among the countless incredible matches he played, his match against INnoVation in WCS Season 3 Finals all the way back in 2013, a match that has been referred to by Blizzard themselves as the best SC game ever played.

While TaeJa is stepping back from competitive play, he leaves quite the legacy behind him. He left his mark on the game, not only winning titles but also participating in some of the most iconic matches of all time.
