UPDATE 7/23: Shortly after the conclusion of the first day of week 8 of the 2021 LCS Summer Split, LCS commissioner Chris Greeley released a statement via the official LCS Twitter account. Another case of COVID-19 has been confirmed in connection to another LCS team in addition to Immortals' situation, and for safety, the rest of week 8 will be played remotely as Immortals played its match against Dignitas today.

Greeley stressed that this was cautionary as neither confirmed case happened in the studio and that the individuals who tested positive had not been on site at the LCS studio whatsoever. The rest of week 8's broadcast will be produced in the studio, but players will be playing remotely, so POV feeds will not be available on Pro View. The LCS will determine next week whether it is safe for players to return to the studio for offline competition in week 9 for the final games of the LCS Summer Split.

Esports organization Immortals announced Thursday evening that two individuals connect to its League of Legends Championship Series team have tested positive for COVID-19. Immortals stated in the announcement that all members of its LCS team had been vaccinated for COVID-19 and that the organization would be working with the LCS to figure out remote competition for week 8 of the Summer Split while the team quarantines.

Despite a few months of vaccination rollouts for COVID-19 throughout the United States, numbers of cases have risen in recent weeks due to the new Delta variant of the Coronavirus. The state with the largest uptick in reported cases is California, where the competitive matches that make up the LCS are played. While it is possible, albeit unlikely, to catch COVID-19 even with vaccination, the Delta variant outbreak has caused the state of California to return to mandatory masking inside.

The LCS confirmed that it was working with Immortals in a Tweet shortly after the team's announcement and that Immortals would be playing remotely for week 8 of the 2021 LCS Summer Split. Additionally, IMT's opponents have also been given the option to compete remotely. To preserve competitive integrity, any games involving Immortals will be broadcasted on a brief delay compared to real events.

Following week 7 of the 2020 LCS Spring Split, the LCS pivoted to online competition due to the global pandemic caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. LCS teams did not compete offline again — save the games TSM, FlyQuest, and Team Liquid played at the 2020 World Championship — until the last two matches of the 2021 LCS Mid-Season Showdown. Teams only returned to the LCS studio for the Summer Split, with no audience and several other precautions put into place.

Whether these individuals on Immortals who have tested positive are players, staff, or a different role related to the team's involvement in the LCS Summer Split is currently unknown.
