A few posters for the upcoming Super Mario movie have been getting shared around Facebook, reigniting the excitement surrounding this film.

It's unclear if the posters are fan-made or official, but fans of Mario are falling for them either way. The posters reflect the movie's release date, which is next year. No month or day has been announced as of yet, but with possibly less than a year left, more details will most likely be coming over the course of 2021.

What do we know about Super Mario the movie?

Fans first caught wind of an animated Super Mario movie in the works back in 2017. That's when Illumination Entertainment's head Chris Meledandri and Super Mario Bros.' creator Shigeru Miyamoto started to talk about the project. But not much else was said at the time.

In a 30-page Corporate Management Policy Briefing in 2020, Nintendo mentioned the movie again. The company explained that they are interested in "visual content expansion," including the CGI film. According to the document, "production is moving ahead smoothly." It's still set for a theatrical release in 2022.

The document had other big news for Nintendo fans. The company has "already embarked on multiple other visual content expansion projects." This has Mario fans wondering what else is in the works with Nintendo's popular characters. The briefing states it won't be limited to movies. Could it also be animated shows? The possibilities are endless.

For now, the Super Mario movie is at the forefront of fans' minds.
