Armada, one of Super Smash Bros. Melee's most famous players is quitting 1 vs. 1 tournaments for good.

Player burnout is a constant threat at the highest level of esports and it seems that Adam "Armada" Lindgren of Super Smash Bros. Melee fame has been suffering from it. Apparently "a year in the making", the Melee veteran and legendary player has announced his indefinite departure from competing in the game in a 1 vs. 1 setting.

"If I can't have fun doing it, there is no point in doing it"

On his YouTube channel, Armada posted a 13-minute video detailing his feelings and explanations for this decision.

"It almost feels to the point where I feel physical sick[ness] most of the time -- where I'm like I really don't want to do this. I've invested so much of my life into this game and especially around this time and age, I really want to make sure that this is what I feel that I want to do."

Citing his past determination to be the very best and the subsequent realization that he, at one point, had achieved this, Armada speaks frankly on his lack of motivation for competing in the cut-throat environment that is competitive Super Smash Bros. Melee singles.

"For me, I can't find the goals, I can't find the happiness. I think it's about time to not play singles any longer"

Still competing in teams

The less popular and oft-underrated 2 vs. 2 mode in competitive Melee is still something Armada will compete in. In the video, he explains that he has more to show and explore in the 2. vs. 2 format and, simply put, it is a lot more fun for him.

Towards the end of the video, Armada even hints at the possibility of him competing in the upcoming Nintendo Switch title, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Perhaps, explains one of the most decorated Melee players of all time, the "new challenge" in a new game will be what he needs to find happiness competing in a 1 vs. 1 setting.
