GRAC sets AR safety guidelines including "No IRL PvP"

On August 5th, the Game Rating and Administration Committee (chairwoman Myung Sook Yeo, GRAC) released safety guidelines regarding Augmented Reality (AR) games. The guidelines are compiled and created from user surveys and on-site counseling data collected from Pokemon Go players in Ganjeolgot, Ulsan at the beginning of August.

GRAC explained that although Pokemon Go hadn’t officially launched in the country, Korean players were still vulnerable to safety pitfalls, citing many safety incidents overseas since the release of Pokemon Go in July. Using these examples, GRAC urged players to use discretion when playing the game, and they began collecting data on safety precaution measures and opinions from players.

The safety guidelines titled “a promise to change the world with a games safety net” are comprised of twelve categories, including eye-catching ones like “no PvP IRL, report monsters in dangerous areas, be aware of hidden cameras, be aware of item fraud, and do not follow strangers.”

Chairwoman Yeo said that video games are one of the most efficient platforms for family communication. She wants to take necessary actions to prevent negative public sentiments about AR gaming and to encourage related domestic industries to flourish. She adds that an AR game is an excellent opportunity for families to bond over a common experience; it provides excitement by blurring boundaries between the virtual and real world, and the committee will do everything in its power to establish a safety net.

Currently, GRAC has formed a task force team to institute a VR game ratings standard.
